'Night Bloom' Stained Glass Lightbox

This piece is based on an illustration by Aubrey Beardsley, made for Sir Thomas Malory’s La Morte d’Arthur. This little plant is part of a much larger illustration in the section of the book on Merlin - it sits somewhere in a forest while the larger events of legend take place around it.

I love the little details Beardsley included in the illustration, though the snail is the only one lifted whole from his original - my tribute to his attention to detail are the ferns, with their particularly delicate and difficult little pieces. I wanted the finished piece to keep the semi-magical feel of the drawing, so I set the plant in the smoky glass and used the lead lines to make it feel as though the plant were enclosed in a bell jar. Having it on the wall feels like keeping a window open into a terrarium of the rare and unusual.

‘Night Bloom’ has over 70 individual pieces made from Youghiogheny Glass and Bullseye Glass, and is set in a cast resin frame painted with green and black enamel. The stained glass panel has been finished with a wax polish to help it keep its shine and prevent oxidation. An LED strip has been set into the frame behind the glass and can be plugged in to illuminate the stained glass - the LED is permanently attached to the frame, but the plug can be easily swapped for a longer or shorter cord if needed (a 6’ cord comes with the framed piece). The frame has a standard picture frame hanger attached, as well as black felt padding to rest against the wall and prevent light leak from behind the frame. While the photos show the piece without an attached backing, it will come with a dark back attached so that it can be hung on lighter walls and all the colors and glass will still be seen as intended.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece - I rarely repeat patterns, and when I do I tend not to repeat colors. The oval frame is one of a vintage pair and cannot be replaced.
